Spoon

Day #183

When I was born, I had received a silver oval soup spoon with my initials engraved at the base of the handle.  Typically when you are born, you may receive a silver baby spoon, cup, rattle,or silver picture frame as a gift from your god parents. I received my spoon from Oma, my grandmother.

The idea  of bestowing a gift to the new born child, when the 3 Magi left gifts for baby Jesus. In Tudor and Victorian times, god parents gave the baby silver, spoons, cups and other items
In the sixteenth century a silver spoon was still pretty rare, so any child receiving such a Christening gift would have to come from a wealthy background. Moreover, if some recent medical research is correct, they were also blessed with a bit of luck. Silver spoons and teethers have been popular for centuries, but it is only in the last few years that the antibiotic properties of silver have been recognized. To put it bluntly, the wealthy Little Lord Fauntleroy teething on a silver Christening spoon had a better chance of survival than a pauper sucking on a lump of pewter or a wooden spoon.

I used a mirror for the background, and after shooting the photo in black and white, I played with the 'split toning' in editing. I didn't want to do a vintage filter on this photo.

I will always treasure my one and only silver spoon, from a lady, my grandmother Juliana, who I met only once and wish I could chat with her now!

So, was I born with a silver spoon in my mouth... maybe I was, not because we are wealthy, but instead for our health! Thank you Oma!

Thank you for taking a look at my blog and photo!

See you soon!
